Our dear mother, Ruby Allene Van Meter sadly passed away on March 7, 2023 at the age of 91. She was born on November 11, 1931, to the late James and Bertha Skaggs of Buffalo, Kentucky. Mom enjoyed the simple things in life. Her greatest love was her family. She raised her six kids and then took on the responsibility to help raise her grandchildren, allowing us to work without worrying about the care our kids were receiving. She did so much and never complained. She loved gospel and country music, bingo, scratch-offs and just riding around with her daughters enjoying the scenery. We lost an angel when God called her home for no one could measure up to her goodness and kindness. Mom did not know a stranger, if we brought you to the house she was going to try and feed you before you left. If you knew our mom, you know what we are talking about. She was not satisfied until you ate. Mom was the heart of our family and she will be painfully missed until we are together again.
In addition to her parents, Ruby is preceded in death by her loving husband of 40 years, George Edward Van Meter Sr.; a son: George Edward Van Meter Jr.; grandchildren: Holland Reynolds, Brian Reynolds, and Gwendolyn Reynolds; great grandchildren: Jesse Reynolds and Hannah Adams; and son-in-laws: Charles (Tim) Burk and Samuel (Sammy) Portman.
Left to cherish her memory, Ruby leaves behind 5 children: Mary Reynolds (Herb), Brenda Burk (Tim), Shirley Awtrey, Judy Portman (Sammy), and Winnie Van Meter; 5 grandchildren: Angel, Misty, Michelle, Shawn, and Sammy Joe; 12 great grandchildren: Derrick, Eric, Aaron, Tyler, Dylan, Heather, Rachel, Peyton, Adrianna, Thorin, Hayley, and Samantha; 9 great-great grandchildren: Ashton, Ethan, Ann Marie, River, AJ, Kori, Salem, James, and Mayben; and a host of extended family and friends.
A funeral service for Mrs. Ruby Allene Van Meter will be held at 12:30 PM on Monday, March 13, 2023, at Legacy Funeral Center – Nunnelley Chapel, 4327 Taylor Blvd., Louisville, Kentucky. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2023, from 1 PM to 8 PM, and prior to the service, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
