The family of Ona Ellis shares the news of her passing. She had 84 years with us and was mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother, mentor, pet parent, as well as friend to many. Her
passing was peaceful and her Christian faith strong in the belief in the promise of John 14:2 “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I would
prepare a place for you there?”
Ona possessed many talents. She was a self-taught musician. In her lifetime, she served as musical director for several choirs and musical groups including plays at J’town High School in
the 1980’s, director of Sing Out Louisville and costuming of shows at Kentucky Kingdom. Her past accomplishments also include directing church choirs at J’town United Methodist Church,
Fourth Avenue United Methodist Church and the former Park Place United Methodist Church. For many years she worked as a medical transcriptionist at St.’s Mary & Elizabeth Hospital. She
also worked at Hancock Fabrics as store manager. Her sewing skills lead her to working in the costume shop at UofL, working on several productions as part of her degree work. She also had
the opportunity to work on costumes for the Louisville Ballet.
While Ona was a graduate of the University of Louisville, but she was an avid Kentucky fan. Game time always found her dressed in Kentucky blue! In more recent years, her decorated
quad cane with blue lights would always garner attention when she was out.
She is preceded in her passing by her parents, Willie and Hazel Woods and infant brother, Raymond Woods. She is survived by her children, Shannon Holt and Shane Ellis; her grandson,
Timothy Holt; her sister, Glenda Walker; her nephews: Kurt Walker, Greg Walker and Eric Walker; a niece, Beth Walker, close “framily” friend Lucy Lane, as well as extended family, friends and neighbors.
The family is planning a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Ona was passionate about supporting the Animal Protection Association (APA) in Jeffersonville, Indiana and supporting public radio and television.
The family is most grateful to the ICU team at Norton Clark who provided excellent, compassionate care.
Arrangements entrusted to Legacy Funeral Center: Scott Chapel at 921 Main Street, Jeffersonville.
