Maureen Mattingly Obituary

Maureen Ann Cavanagh Mattingly, 71, died November 23, 2022, surrounded by her loving family; death was due to complications from rheumatoid arthritis. Maureen was the daughter of William J. and Mary Sullivan Cavanagh; she was born in Queens and grew up in Elmont, NY. After graduating from Sewanhaka HS she attended Creedmoor State Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1972. Maureen worked as a registered nurse in NY and FL before moving to Louisville in 1990 to be closer to family. In Louisville she worked at the VNA and Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital; she loved her work and only retired when her health worsened.

Maureen was a devoted Catholic and an active member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church; she served as a Eucharistic Minister and especially enjoyed bringing Communion to patients at Sts. Mary and Elizabeth. Maureen was a voracious reader, usually reading a book a day. She loved vacationing at the beach, the color pink, film noir, shopping- but only for bargains, and drinking tea- but only in a thin white china cup. Her Christmas trees were spectacular. An excellent cook and baker, her holiday meals were a treat; everyone’s favorites were always on the menu. Maureen’s car was always full of food and clothing she was collecting for the poor.

Most of all, Maureen loved her family. She is survived by her devoted husband of 28 years (Thomas) Wayne Mattingly, son Michael Meoni, grand-daughter Zoey, stepson Frank Meoni, his wife Alice and their children Steven, Mary, and Nicole of Coral Springs, FL. Also surviving are her sister Joan C. Masters, brother William J. Cavanagh, his partner Barbara Hundley, and brother Daniel J. Cavanagh and his wife Karen of The Woodlands, TX. She is also survived by her nephews Colin E. Masters of Danville, William J. Cavanagh, his wife Jansu, their children Liam and Callan of Billerica, MA, Devin Cavanagh, his wife Jillian and their children Mason, Audrey, and Cameron of Billerica MA, and MacKenzie Cavanagh of Quincy, MA, and niece Carolyn Masters Wallace and her husband Greg of Loveland, OH. Also surviving are her brother-in-law Dan Mattingly and his wife Elizabeth and Dan’s children Joey, his wife Miranda and their children Silas and Saleh and son Brian, his wife Amber and their children Luke, Olivia, and Addison, and Elizabeth’s son Dylan. Christine Cavanagh, Maureen’s former sister-in-law of Hopedale, MA, and many cousins in New York also survive. Maureen was predeceased by her parents and sister Nancy.
