Lois "Jean" (Waters) Smith

Lois “Jean” Smith, 85, passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023, in Louisville, Kentucky. She was born on February 8, 1938, to the late John and Dollie Waters in Lebanon Junction, Kentucky. Jean loved spending time with her family, and was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She loved being surrounded by friends and family making memories. Jean was very outgoing and never met a stranger, she could always be found having a good time. In her spare time, Jean enjoyed playing cards and dice games like Blitz with the family, watching her beloved UK Wildcats play, and travelling with her children to NASCAR races, going to Alabama for vacation, and visiting Disney World to act like a kid again. Jean will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, John Waters and Dollie Samuels Waters, Jean is preceded in death by her loving husband, Gilbert Smith.

Left to cherish her memory, Jean leaves behind 4 children, Ronnie Waters, Clarence “Billy” Griggs, Betty Griggs (Jerry), and Mike Griggs (Stephanie); 6 grandchildren, Angie Gossman (Jamie), Ronnie Faust (Laurie), Kristina Jutz, Belinda Smith, Ricky Griggs (Liz), and Micky Griggs (Gracie); brother, Joe Raley (Barbara); bonus son, William Nair (Christy); 12 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren plus one on the way; and a host of extended family and close friends.

A funeral service for Ms. Lois “Jean” Smith will be held at 5 PM on Sunday, April 16, 2023, at Legacy Funeral Center – Nunnelley Chapel, 4327 Taylor Blvd., Louisville, Kentucky. Visitation will be held from 12 PM to 8 PM on Saturday, April 15, 2023, and 12 PM to 5 PM prior to the service, at the funeral home. Burial at St. Stephens Cemetery will take place on Monday, April 17, 2023, at 11 AM.
