Kevin Leigh Jemerson Obituary
Kevin Leigh Jemerson, 65, of Jeffersonville, Indiana, passed away during the evening hours of June 24. He was born on March 19, 1961, to parents Devoe Jemerson and Beatrice Elizabeth (Brown) Jemerson.
Born and raised in Jeffersonville, Indiana, Kevin was a man of deep roots, sharp intellect, and an incredibly generous spirit. He built a meaningful career at Humana, retiring from the exact same building where his father had previously retired years prior when it was Belknap—this was a unique family legacy he loved to share.
Kevin’s deep commitment to his community and country began early in life. He graduated from Jeffersonville High School in 1979 and went on to attend Indiana State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1983. Proud of his country, Kevin honorably served as an Army Reservist, achieving the rank of Sergeant (SGT/E5) with the HHC 212th S&S Battalion based at 11th & Penn Street in Jeffersonville.
On September 26, 1992, Kevin married the love of his life (at least that’s what she says), Darlene. Though they did not have children of their own, Kevin’s heart was endlessly big; Kevin stepped in selflessly to be a dependable and loving presence in the lives of his nieces and nephews.
Kevin possessed a vibrant mind and a passion for life's simple pleasures. He was an avid history buff, loved a lively debate about politics, and found immense joy in music. A lifelong sports fanatic, Kevin played basketball, baseball, and golf for as long as he was able. He was a master at the grill, hosting many cookouts and smoking BBQ for the people he loved. He also found great joy in the outdoors through hunting, a pastime he cherished sharing with his father and his brother, Lowell.
Before his illness, Kevin was always ready for an adventure. Whether traveling abroad, cross country or enjoying quiet moments camping, fishing, kayaking, hiking, and bicycling, Kevin embraced every moment with enthusiasm and a deep love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, intellect, and profound devotion to those he held dear.
Kevin was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Lowell Jemerson. Those left to cherish his memory are: beloved wife of 34 years, Mamie Darlene (Stewart) Jemerson; daughter of his heart, Briana Jade Watterson, sisters, Linda Jemerson, (aka Ama Boakyewa), Hope deWaart Jemerson, Jonetta Marie Jemerson; stepmother, Mary Francis; brother, Marlon Lamont Jemerson; as well as a host of loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation for Kevin will be held at the Legacy Funeral Center (921 Main Street, Jeffersonville, Indiana), on Thursday, July 2, from 11:00AM – 1:00PM. A celebration of life will follow visitation, at 1:00PM. Kevin will be laid to rest near his brother Lowell, at Eastern Cemetery in Jeffersonville.
Donations in Kevin’s memory may be made to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (https://www.in.gov/dnr/about-us/donating-to-the-dnr).
