Joan Chapin, age 66, passed away on May 14, 2025. Born on August 10, 1958, in Louisville,
Kentucky, she was the beloved daughter of the late Raymond Campbell and Alvenia Sheilly
Campbell.
Joan worked for several years as a warehouse employee, but her true life’s work was loving and
caring for those around her. Known by many as “Mama Chicken,” a nickname she earned from
the countless people who considered her a second mom, Joan brought warmth, humor, and light
to every room she entered. Whether she was playing bingo, bunko, or cards with her family and
friends, Joan was always the life of the party. Her signature phrase, “mama chicken,”
affectionately replaced a couple of well-known curse words — a playful quirk that her loved
ones will never forget.
Joan is survived by her loving husband, Art Chapin; her devoted daughter, Rebecca Keown
(James, III); her cherished grandchildren, Alissa Keown and Dylan Keown; her sister, Susie
Koenig; her brothers, Ronald Campbell and Gary Campbell; and her loyal companion, Zoey, a
bull mastiff and hound dog mix who never left her side.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m., and again on
Wednesday, May 21, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the Legacy Schoppenhorst
Chapel Funeral Home, 1832 W. Market St., Louisville, KY 40203. The funeral service will take
place on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m., with cremation to follow.
Joan’s legacy of laughter, kindness, and unconditional love will live on in all who knew her. In
the words of those closest to her — there will never be another "Mama Chicken"!
