Gertrude (Lillian Snelling) Lewis, age 97, of Jeffersonville, passed away Friday, December 19, 2025, leaving behind a lifetime of love, laughter, and treasured memories. Born to the late Stanley and Lillian (Bundren) Snelling, Gertrude lived a life defined by devotion—to her family, her faith, and her community. She faithfully served others for over thirty years as a dietician at Clark Memorial Hospital, retiring after three decades of quiet dedication and care that reflected her generous heart. Gertrude knew how to savor life. She loved a good adventure, whether it was traveling to the casinos, enjoying the slot machines in Vegas, betting on her favorite horses at Derby Parties, road trips with her sister on Toby Tours, or settling in for an enthusiastic game of BINGO—where her smile was just as memorable as her excitement. Music filled her home and her spirit, and she could often be found dancing, singing, and “jamming out” to the timeless voices of George Jones, Loretta Lynn, and Patsy Cline.
A proud lifetime member of the Clark County Conservation Club of Utica, Gertrude shared countless laughs and unforgettable moments there with friends and family. She was also actively involved in the American Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary, always enjoying fellowship and good company. And true to her joyful nature, Gertrude truly loved to eat—savoring every wonderful meal and appreciating each bite with gratitude and delight. Her faith was an important anchor in her life. A devoted member of Colgate Baptist Church, Gertrude cherished the friendships she made in Sunday School and held those relationships close to her heart. Above all else, Gertrude’s greatest joy was her family—especially her grandbabies. She poured her love into each of them, creating a world filled with giggles, snuggles, sleepovers, and special trips. To them, she was Grandma Gertrude—the warm, loving presence who made them feel endlessly cherished. They were truly the light of her life.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ira Lewis; her daughters, Norma Johnson, Brenda Harris, and Carol Craig; and her cherished granddaughter, Amy Craig.
Gertrude’s legacy of love lives on through her daughters, Phyllis Squier (Verne) and Mary Reynolds (David); her brother, Wilbur Snelling; her grandchildren, Lance, Shelby, Betty, Michael, Chris, Tera, and Tonya; her great-grandchildren, Haley, Kevin, Alisha, Aiden, Andrew, Sydney, Brandon, Hannah, David Allen, Jasmine, and Tristan; and her great-great-grandchildren, Trinidy Lewis & Jayce Miley.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at Legacy Funeral Center – Scott Chapel (921 Main Street, Jeffersonville), officiated by Travis Alberson. Entombment will follow in the Walnut Ridge Mausoleum. Friends may visit on Saturday from 11:00 AM until the time of service.
Gertrude will be remembered for her joyful spirit, her deep love for family, her faith, and her ability to find happiness in life’s simple pleasures. Her warmth, laughter, and gentle presence will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered always.
