Eleanor Ruth White

Eleanor “Ruth” White, 73, of Jeffersonville, Indiana passed away on April 1, 2024, at her home surrounded by family and friends. She was born on October 19, 1950, in Jeffersonville, Indiana to Harry Hiram Newman and Dorothy Pearl (Singer) Newman. 

Ruth married Samuel Andrew White on October 22, 1972.  She worked various jobs in Jeffersonville before her and Sam decided to move to Tecumseh, Oklahoma in 1986.  It was there that Ruth furthered her education as a Dietary Manager and worked for Tecumseh Public Schools.  The two lived in Oklahoma for over 20 years before returning to Jeffersonville where Ruth was employed by Snyder’s-lance Inc (Krunchers) for ten years before retiring. 

Ruth was Christian by faith and found strength in her faith throughout her life's journey. She had a love for fishing, finding the simple joys in nature by the water’s edge.  She was an avid reader and loved all animals but had a special place in her heart for chihuahua dogs.  Ruth’s vibrant spirit was evident in her enthusiasm for festivals.  You could always find her with her sister, Jeanie, at the Oktoberfest in Seymour, IN and Thunder Over Louisville every year.  She always enjoyed the community and the atmosphere. Ruth also loved spending holiday gatherings with her brother-in-law family and had a special love for Halloween.

Above all she treasured her time with her family and friends.  She could always be seen at every family reunion and had been the host of a few on her mother’s side.  One of Ruth’s most recent family gatherings was a trip to Oklahoma with Jeanie to see their sister, Sharon, and her family.

Ruth’s legacy of kindness, faith, and love for life will inspire those whose lives she touched.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel White; brother, Kenneth Johnson; sisters, Marie Sanders, Beverly Johnson and Sharon Shetley.

Ruth is survived by her sister, Harriet “Jeanie” Stewart and husband Mike; nieces, Deana Stewart and husband Ronnie, Kim Nash; Gary Johnson and wife Terri;  Penny Bohannon and husband Randy; Shawn Yates and husband Shane;  John Gray; Jerome Gray and wife Rhonda. And several great nieces and nephews. 

There will be a visitation held on Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 4-7pm at Legacy Funeral Center, 921 Main Street, Jeffersonville, Indiana 47130. Her service will be on Friday, April 5, 2024 at 12pm with more visitation before from 10-12pm at Legacy Funeral Center. Burial will follow at Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
