Edith Bruning Pitzer Obituary

Pitzer, Edith Lepping Bruning passed peacefully on January 4, 2022.  She was preceded in death by her husbands, Walter “Bud” Bruning and Vaughn “Pete” Pitzer;  son, Dr. Jeff Bruning;  daughter, Rebecca Bruning Manyak;  and her parents, brothers and sisters. She is survived by her children:  Dr. Walter (Joanne) Bruning, Susan Mossholder (Kevin), Madge Dennis (Tim) and Will (Judy) Bruning, son-in-law Dr. Michael Manyak and daughter-in-law Kitty Bruning, 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Edith was born 12/13/1922 to Gus and Louise Lepping, the 5th of 6 children.  She graduated as valedictorian from Girls’ High School and attended the University of Louisville with a chemistry scholarship.  At U of L, she was a cheerleader and president of Sigma Kappa Sorority.  Upon graduation, she enlisted in the WAVES and served as a weather forecaster.   After her service, she married Bud Bruning and had a rewarding life raising 6 children.  She loved tennis, her bridge groups and was a founding member of a book club which is still active today   In their retirement years, Edith and Bud enjoyed travels in Europe, the US and Mexico and developed a love of antiques.  After Bud’s death, she met her second husband Pete while on a trip to Venice, Italy.  They married and shared 11 happy years together. Over time, she became involved with the Bluegrass Honor Flight and other activities celebrating veterans.   She relished riding in the Veterans’ Day Parade and even flew on a B-52.  We will miss her wit and her ever optimistic spirit.  She was so proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and has passed along her mantra, “Family is all.”

There will only be a private ceremony at this time, due to COVID.
