Darrell Wayne Bartels, 66, joined his parents Donald and Marian Bartels, and brother, Rory Bartels in Heaven, on Tuesday, December 1, 2020. Darrell was born at the Naval hospital in Portsmith, Virginia on October 4, 1954. He grew up in a Navy family that spent time in Virginia, California, Washington State and Louisiana. After graduating from Ponchatoula High school, Darrell followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Navy during the Vietnam War. He traveled the world keeping the electrical systems on the ships running in tip top condition, never getting electrocuted. He also took part in Operation Desert Storm, the Kuwait War and “guarding cows” in Wisconsin training soldiers with the Army reserve. His final assignment with the Navy reserves was the Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare unit 205. When his active duty ended, he settled in Chesapeake, Virginia and joined the Chesapeake Police Department, retiring in 1999.
The BSA was his life from childhood on. Darrell earned multiple awards, including becoming an Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver and many others. Scouters agree, he was a “Hoot”.
Darrell will be missed by his loving wife of almost 33 years, Rhona Alldaffer Bartels; 2 children, Daniel Wayne Bartels and Tobias Rose Bartels; his fur kids, Baby Bart the doggie and Cyclops the kitty; 2 brothers, Robert Bartels (Kim) and Dale Bartels (Susan); and multiple nieces.
A memorial burial for Mr. Darrell Bartels will be held December 6, 2021 at 2:30 PM at the New Albany National Cemetery, 1943 Ekin Ave, New Albany, Indiana. In honoring Mr. Bartels, the family asks that any attending BSA members or military Veterans wear their uniforms.
