Coy William "Bill" Smith Jr.

Coy William "Bill" Smith Jr., 81, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 6, 2024 in Louisville, Kentucky. Born on February 12, 1943, to Coy W. Smith Sr. and Mary Bernice Smith in Louisville, Bill's life was a testament to dedication, love, and quiet strength. Bill was a cherished father, brother, papaw, and pa, touching the lives of those around him with his warmth and kindness. He served the city of Louisville with distinction as a firefighter for 22 years, embodying courage and selflessness in the face of danger.

A proud graduate of Louisville Male High School, class of 1961, Bill held a deep love for his alma mater and the city he called home. He found immense joy in watching his grandson Joey excel in baseball, their shared passion for the sport fostering a special bond between them. While Bill was a man of few words, his love for the U of L Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, and Elvis Presley spoke volumes. He found solace and excitement in listening to sporting events rather than watching them on TV, a unique quirk that endeared him to those who knew him well.

Bill loved visiting his first born granddaughter, Kearstin, and great-grandchildren. His visits were always filled with laughter and love. Kearstin held a special place in Bill’s heart, and he was so happy and proud of her for everything she has overcome and accomplished. His weekly visits with his grandson, Blake, were spent talking baseball and basketball, and taking a stroll down memory lane. He found happiness in simple pleasures and treasured family above all else. In remembering Bill, we honor a man of integrity, humility, and unwavering love. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him, and his memory will continue to inspire kindness and compassion for generations to come.   

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Coy William Smith Sr., and Mary Bernice Keene Smith. 

Left to cherish him memory, Bill is survived by his daughter, Becky Henry (Kevin); sister, Rita Heitzman (Terry); 5 grandchildren, Kearstin (Eric), Blake, Miles, Joey, and Malcolm; 2 great-grandchildren, Kendall, and Eric Jr. "Bubby"; son, Brian Smith; and a host of extended family and close friends.

A funeral service for Mr. Bill Smith Jr. will be held at 6 PM on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at Legacy Funeral Center - Nunnelley Chapel, 4327 Taylor Blvd., Louisville, Kentucky. Visitation will be held from 3 PM to 6 PM at the funeral home, prior to the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in Bill's name to the Salvation Army, and/or the Boys and Girls Club.
