Carlotta Marie (Hartzell) Nichols, 73, passed away unexpectedly on March 20 in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Born on July 17, 1950 in Brookville, Pennsylvania, she was the third child of Harold and Joan Hartzell. Carlotta was one of nine children, and was known as Coddi by her family and school friends. She graduated with a B.S. in Education from Slippery Rock University, and was a teacher and driver’s ed instructor for a brief time.
She was a devoted wife for 39 years, a beloved mom to four children, and ‘Mama’ to six grandchildren. She was nicknamed Sally by her loving husband; many knew her by that name for a period of her life, including those who worked with her when she worked Customer Service in the retail industry. She enjoyed completing puzzles and seek-and-finds, had a love for beautiful dishes and items depicting small woodland creatures, and often bought more yarn and fabric than she’d ever be able to use. She had a green thumb and often collected cuttings from a variety of random places. She loved houseplants as much as she did the flowers she planted in her outdoor flower beds, which were often a hodgepodge of whatever beautiful and colorful plant drew her eye.
Carlotta loved making things for those she loved. She crocheted blankets for babies at Baptist Hospital Floyd who didn’t make it Earthside, and made numerous items (including hats for the children) for her daughter’s Early Ed classroom at Community Montessori. Every grandchild had at least one handmade blanket that became their ‘lovey.’ Carlotta embodied creativity and kindness, and that’s what those who knew her best will remember.
Carlotta was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Nichols; her parents; her brother, Phil Hartzell; and her sister, Mary Corbett. She is survived by her children, Craig Young, Danny (Janet) Nichols, Amy (Matt) Adams, and Kasey Nichols (Jeff Kersey); her grandchildren, Dakota, Noah, Lucy, Vivi, Remy, and Betty; and her siblings, Diane Greeley, Joce (Dan) Smrekar, Mark (Eileen) Hartzell, Greg Hartzell, Jeff (Jackie) Hartzell, and Annette (Ed) Crawford.
Visitation will be held from 11am to 2pm on Tues., March 26, 2024 at Legacy Funeral Center, 921 Main Street in Jeffersonville. Funeral services in honor of her life will follow at 2pm the same day, with cremation to follow.
